Part 1

Definition

Procedure text is a text that explains or helps us how to make or use something. Its social function is to describe how something is completely done through a sequence of steps. Communicative purpose of this text is to describe how something is made through a sequence of actions or steps.

There are three generic structures in procedure text.

1. Goals
2. Material
3. Step or method

Purpose of Procedure text

- To explain/tell (the reader) how to make/operate/do something through a sequence of actions or steps.
- To explain steps/instruction to make/operate/do something

Language feature of Procedure text

1. Use adverbial of sequence / Using temporal conjunction (e.g: first, second, third, the last)
2. Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurate, for example, for five minutes, 2 hours, etc.
3. Use command / imperative sentence (e.g : put the noodles on the . . ., cut the onion. . ., wash the tomatoes. . . )
4. Using action verbs, e.g : make, take, boil, cook
5. Using Simple Present Tense.

Example Of Procedure Text

How To Make Fruit Ice


Materials :
  • Mango
  • Avocado
  • Sugar water
  • Milk
  • Ice
  • Apple
  • Strawberries
  • Wine
  • Jackfruit

Steps :
First, Cut the fruit round or dice.
Then, Scratching the flesh of a melon.
Then, Boil sugar with water until cooked for about 30 minutes.
Next, Put in serving glasses that have been cut round pieces or dice.
Then, to taste Pour the sugar water, put ice cubes and put milk on ice fruit.
Last, put the decorations on the glass with a piece of strawberry on it.

How to Make Bregedel Tempe

The ingredients:


150 g tempe
1 tablespoon flour
1 egg
1 spoon Royco
1 cup vegetable oil for frying
 


Here are the instructions:

Mash the tempe with a fork.
Put the mashed tempe in a bowl and mix with the flour and Royco, followed by an egg.
Shape the tempe into the size of a golf ball and flatten a little with a fork.
Heat the vegetable oil in a medium flame. When the oil is hot, drop the tempe into the oil, five or six at a time.
Fry until golden brown on both sides, drain on absorbent paper and serve hot with chili or sauce.

Material:

Steps:
First you connect the cable to the socket
Second turn on the power button
Third turn on monitor 
The last one just wait until the computer is finished loading and ready to use.

Example Procedure Text How To Use Something

How To Use Camera

You need :
  • A digital camera (DSLR camera or pocket camera or the others camera that you have)
  • The object (find something that interesting to you like animals, buildings or the others)
Steps :
  • Handle the camera and turn on it
  • Center the object in the lcd and manage the zoom control untill you get the best view
  • When you are ready to take the picture, hold the shutter speed, and various other calculations.
  • Then, a light should appear that let you know the camera is set to go.
  • After that, press shutter all the way down.

Part 4

Example Procedure Text How To Make Something

How To Make Brownies


Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 200 grams butter

Steps:
  • Turn the oven to 180C and line a 30 x 20 cm tin with baking paper (or grease it).
  • In a medium sized saucepan, put the butter and cocoa.
  • Melt it gently and make sure you don’t boil it.
  • Add the sugar and the vanilla, and stir it in well.
  • Take the mixture off the heat and sift in the flour. Stir it in well.
  • Add the eggs, beating them in really well.
  • If using them, add the chopped walnuts and stir them in.
  • Spread the mixture in the tin. Bake for 20 – 25 minutes.
